The Heritage of the Dialogue and the Circulation of Ideas between Universities

Relationships between Academic Institutions

Since the Middle Ages, connections between European universities have fostered imitation processes of practices and rituals. The medieval statue (1340) from the Jagellonian University, for example, attests to this, as the lecturer's figure mimics the traditions followed at the University of Bologna. Since the end of the 19th century the interactions between institutions became more formal and frequent. Good illustrations of this include greetings at centennial events. More recently, the initiatives associated with the European integration effort gave rise to the Magna Charta Universitatum (1988), a declaration of principles and a shared intellectual endeavour adopted by numerous universities.
