The Magna Charta Universitatum was signed in Bologna by 388 rectors and heads of universities from all over Europe and beyond on 18 September 1988. This document contains principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy as a guideline for the good governance and self-understanding of universities in the future. It also claims that teaching and research can greatly contribute to cultural growth, beyond any geographical and political border.Today, it has acquired a guiding role within the international academic community.
