Unveiling the Environmental Heritage of University Museums

Circular economy and eco-friendly materials

The university collections include numerous objects that demonstrate the commitment to making the economy more circular and to creating more environmentally friendly materials. The trousseau tray held by the ethnobotanical collections of the Complutense University of Madrid witnesses the use and re-use of natural material in traditional cultures, providing a bridge between ecological conservation and cultural heritage. The shirt mending sample from the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki testifies to the existence of educational models aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of repairing. From the same university, the cell culture medium based on hydrogel material instead of animal-based products, demonstrates the efforts to create and use materials with a lower carbon footprint.
