The 70-centimetre sculpture of "The teaching Professor" comes from a seat of funeral sculptures, most of which are now housed in Civic Mueum of the Middle Ages in Bologna. It depicts professors of the University of Bologna. It is mostly likely that this sculpture was originally the central part of a figural composition, together with others from this group, and consisted of the master - professor, with students seated on both sides of him.
