Description

In 1923, thanks to Professor Tadeusz Banachiewicz (1882-1954), the ‘American’ telescope was brought from the Harvard College Observatory to the Jagiellonian University. ‘American’ was the nickname given to the telescope with an objective having 203 mm in diameter and 2.844 focal length, considered the largest Polish refracting telescope in that period. The instrument was placed in the eastern dome of the Astronomical Observatory located at the Kopernika Street and its purposes included the observation of stellar occultation by the Moon, as well as determining the minimum brightness of eclipsing variable stars.
